Creative Life

From stunning artworks to breathtaking musical performances and dramatic productions, the creative arts flourish at Guildford High School.

Music

Girls at Guildford High School are passionate about music and we create numerous opportunities for participation and performance for musicians of all ability levels.  A lively programme of events includes informal and major concerts at school and local venues, foreign tours and musicals as well as annual highlights such as the Carol Service at Guildford Cathedral.

Over 500 instrumental lessons take place each week and there are six choirs, including three large choirs for all-comers and auditioned Chamber Choirs for the most able singers.  A Joint Schools’ Chamber Choir was established in 2009 for the most able singers in the Senior Chamber Choir and features tenors and basses from the Royal Grammar School.  Girls can audition for the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Band (Grade 5/6 standard and above), while the String Orchestra and Mathias Band offers ensemble opportunities for less experienced instrumentalists.  Around 50 ensembles, such as the Big Band, Brass, Guitar, Clarinet and Flute Ensembles, meet each week and perform at concerts.  Music Scholarships are available at 11+ and 16+.

You can listen to some recent musical highlights here or visit the GHS Soundcloud to hear more.

Drama

At almost every point throughout the school year auditions and rehearsals are underway for the next highly anticipated dramatic production.  In Michaelmas Term, the Year 7 Panto (written, produced and directed by the Lower Sixth) and a double bill of plays by the older girls bring fun, creativity and theatrical skills to the stage.  Years 8 and 9 annually tackle the challenge of the Shakespeare Festival, during which each form puts on an abridged Shakespeare play.  Every two years a major musical and dramatic production takes place in the Lent Term and the lower half of senior school stages a play to close the year on a dramatic high in Trinity Term.  These productions foster a great sense teamwork and require commitment and enthusiasm from the girls, whether they are taking a leading role on stage or contributing their skills as part of the technical crew.

Art and Design

The corridors of Guildford High School are filled with artworks from girls of all ages.  From the start of Year 7, girls learn to explore the world of art, acquiring practical skills and developing an understanding of aesthetic analysis.  The girls are introduced to three dimensional work, explore tone and texture in drawing, investigate colour mixing and examine the paint techniques of artists.  Further up the school, GCSE and A Level artists cultivate their individual styles and study the historical and social context of art; a stunning art exhibition is put on each year at the end of GCSE and A Level course, providing friends and family with the chance to view the girls’ collective works.  You can view examples of recent art work produced by GHS pupils in our online Art Gallery.
