Music Teachers’ Awards

‘Wassail! Carols of Comfort and Joy’ which was commissioned by United Learning and premiered in Southwark Cathedral at the end of November, bringing nearly 500 pupils from across United Learning schools together, has won the Classic FM Best Classical Music Education Initiative at this year’s Music Teachers’ Awards.
The piece, which was composed by Alexander L’Estrange and conducted by him at the premiere, was created to inspire collaboration, musical excellence and joy through choral singing. Performers from UL independent schools and academies across the South - including our own Consort Choir (Year 6) and Lower School Chamber Choir (Years 7-9) - took part in the London premiere, side by side with acclaimed vocal ensemble Apollo 5 and Alexander’s folk band, in a unique initiative. The award, presented to Catherine Barker, UL’s Head of Music and Performing Arts, was voted for by the general public via Classic FM. Thank you to our parents who voted for us!
‘Wassail’ was a great project of which to be part and the composition thoroughly deserved the award. We had a great time singing in Southwark!
