Model United Nations

On Saturday 13th January 2018 GHS hosted our inaugural Model United Nations conference. There was a wonderful buzz throughout the school as our team of students from across Year 10 to Upper Sixth came together to transform the building, decorating a range of rooms and the Main Hall with country placards and an abundance of flags.
We had nine visiting schools making up 16 delegations, as well as three of our own delegations, who were representing the UK, Germany and Estonia. The topics under discussion ranged from the rights of suspected terrorists to the Rohingya crisis and the impact of social media. In the afternoon our crisis debate, speculating as to what the UN reaction would be to a nuclear accident in the DPRK, produced some excellent ideas and a great deal of fun.
Our fantastic Secretariat, made up of experienced Upper Sixth students, ran the day and their committee rooms brilliantly, controlling the flow of debate with calm, poise and good humour. The vast team of runners who helped to facilitate communication between delegates and Chairs on the day worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the whole event.
The conference was an excellent opportunity for our GHS students to engage wholeheartedly in the pressing issues of the day and welcome other schools to share in the experience of open and lively discussion. Congratulations to all of the students who took part on making a success of our very first MUN conference.
